What Our Tags Mean
Independently Owned. Every brand in this directory is independently owned. A real person whose name is on it built this brand and still leads it. No corporate subsidiaries. No conglomerates. No white-label products dressed up as independent brands. Black-owned, woman-owned, minority-owned, family-owned, veteran-owned, and immigrant-founded brands all carry this tag. Independently owned means you know exactly whose vision and work brought it to life.
Consciously Built. This brand made deliberate choices about how it operates. Consciously Built recognizes brands that went beyond the minimum when it comes to materials, ingredients, packaging, and production. Sustainable materials, non-toxic formulas, ethical sourcing, eco-friendly packaging, and cruelty-free practices all qualify. These are brands that thought carefully about what they put into the world.
Community Rooted. This brand exists for something larger than itself. Community Rooted recognizes brands that give back, support local makers and artisans, donate a portion of proceeds, or were founded in direct service of a community. Not every brand carries this tag. When one does, it means something.
